Grow Veg

Grow your greens
The message that has been continuously passed down from generation to generation is “eat your greens”. These days the government are keen to promote this idea with the change4life initiative. We are bombarded with facts and figures on the importance of eating fresh fruit and veg and TV chefs like Jamie Oliver,Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and Gordan Ramsay repeatedly tell us that local and organic are simply the best both in taste and nutrition.
Well you may be thinking that’s fine for a famous chef or politician as stretching the budget a little to accommodate the higher prices of local and organic should not be a great dent in the finances but for the rest of us this could prove to be more than a little tricky. However there really is a simple solution, don’t just eat your greens grow them. Having your own vegetable patch really is most rewarding and whatever time and money you spend planting, tending and harvesting your crops will prove to be far more economical and productive than endless trips to the supermarket. Investing a few more pence on organic products at the growing stage is far more affordable and will ensure truly organic crops and you really can’t get more local than your Own Garden.
Now you may be hearing the message loud and clear but may have limited or no garden space. Again here in Torbay we have the answer known as the Garden Share Scheme. This is a brilliant project where garden owners who require some help with maintenance are united with would be gardeners who have no space of their own.
All you need to do to be part of the project is register with a garden share scheme co-ordinator who will identify your requirements and match you with a suitable like minded garden owner or Gardener. There is a small annual fee of £10 as you are asked to join the (C.S.F) Community Supported Farming and if all parties are agreeable you will each sign a contract so the scheme can be monitored. For more information visit www.transitiontorbay.ning.com.
This is an ideal opportunity to get active, produce your own veg and bring back some of that community spirit.
