Vegetable Planting Guide

When is the best time to start planting in MASS.?
I recently just moved into a house with lots of property, I would like to start a garden filled with MANY things! Iv never planted anything before! I would like to know some good recommendations for things to plant whether its vegetables flowers treas fruits and also where is a good place to start the garden? Do i need to buy new soil? Put up a fence? Do i need to buy fertillizer? I am very clueless to everything in this subject. Also if there is any good book on Gardening for beginners that i can purchase to help guide me in the process? Thanks!
I wouldn’t start with trees… they take a long time to grow. It can be 10 or 15 years before you get fruit off of them. Start with some easy vegetables like potatoes, tomatos, cucumbers, etc. I would recommend radishes because they are easy to grow and they grow really fast… you can get 4 or 5 crops in before winter easily. Go to a store that sells seeds and see what they have… plant whatever you enjoy eating, that’s the most important thing. Plant them a few weeks after the last frost in spring. April is probably a safe bet.
Soil and Fertilizer – If you don’t already have a garden or the soil is poor quality, you will probably want to buy some soil or manure. Don’t buy it in bags from stores… you can usually get it delivered by the truckload for a lot cheaper. Once you start your garden also set up a composter or two. Not only are you helping the environment and recycling, it also makes great new soil for your garden year after year.
Fences will help keep out wild animals if you don’t live in the city. In the city if it is in your yard you don’t really need another fence around it. For berries you will probably need to put chicken wire around them to keep birds from eating all of them.
There are lots of good books on the subject but you should be also able to find information on the internet for free. There are lots of amateur gardeners on the internet sharing information. Just search for each plant you want to grow and you will find all kinds of growing information.
Learn how to use and get a good set of garden equipment…. hoe, spade, rake, etc. Especially if you are going to have a huge garden it will make your job a lot easier with the right kind of tools.
Put your garden where it gets lots of morning light. Make sure you don’t put your garden so that it’s always in the shade of your house or other structures, or the plants won’t do well at all.
If you notice that some of your neighbours have gardens, ask them for help and I’m sure they would be glad to give you some tips, especially if you offer to help them do some work on their Own Garden in the spring. Then they can show you how to do things the right way, and they will be glad to not have to do it themselves.
