Using Outdoor Bench Plans to Build a Garden Bench in a Weekend   by Lee Frett

Ok, so you have a sunny area of your garden that you really like and you would like to build a garden bench to be able to enjoy the space more, what do you need to consider before you start?

  • Firstly I would look at the space and decide how big an outdoor bench I would like to build.I wouldn’t want a monster of a bench in a little piece of yard overpowering the area, so I would choose a design that fits in and might enhance the area rather than overpower it. To help me decide I would look through a portfolio of outdoor bench plans and decide on a design based on the size of the bench and what I think might look good there.
  • Next, I would then choose a material that fits around what I can get locally, and at a good price. Fortunately my favorite timber, cedar, is widely available at most lumber yards, generally already in the sizes I need and at a price I can afford.

However, that’s not all there is to choose from, and many of you may prefer to use a building lumber like pine, it’s certainly cheaper than cedar but if you are going to leave it exposed to the weather, it will need to be protected with a good quality wood preservative or a few coats of paint. Cedar is OK left exposed.

  • And Lastly, I would decide from my outdoor bench plans what tools I may need if I haven’t already got them. I have built up a good tool collection of tools by only buying what I immediately need for a job, rather than spending much. I also look around second hand markets as I prefer to use older good quality tools rather than cheap imported stuff. You probably have what you need already in your garage or shed.

The most important of these three things to consider is the set of plans you buy.

You really need a set that gives as much information as possible, including step by step instructions, schematics and a complete bill of materials for each project. You don’t want surprises halfway through building your outdoor bench, only to find you have to go back to the store to get more screws that weren’t mentioned before. The plans I recommend even have step by step videos.
